The experience
The day starts with a one-hour drive from Muscat toward Rustaq, passing Hazm Fort in the Al Batinah region. The fort sits on a hillside with traditional Omani defense features: a massive wooden gate, secret escape tunnels, fortified towers, and openings at the top of the main entrance designed to pour boiling oil or date honey on attackers. After the fort, the route crosses the White Sands desert, where high dunes attract off-road enthusiasts, before arriving at Wadi Alhoqain in the Al Hawqeen District.
At the valley, a short hike leads to the water's edge where the swim begins. You travel roughly a kilometer through the canyon, moving between pools and cascades, with palm tree farms and valley views framing the route. The return swim retraces the same path back to the starting point. The whole canyon section takes two to four hours depending on your pace and how long you spend in the water. After the swim, the tour moves to Blue Lake, a separate oasis with a waterfall at its center.
Lunch happens on the riverbank in a quiet spot with views of Oman's farms and a refreshing breeze. The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, and the guide speaks English or Arabic. The tour is customizable. Your guide can adjust which stops you visit and how long you spend at each one based on what interests you.
