Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole
- Drive 2 hours to Wadi Shab
- Cross wadi by small fishing boat
- Hike through canyon and swim in pools
- Dive through keyhole to cave waterfall
- Have lunch at local restaurant
- Visit and swim at Bimmah Sinkhole
The experience
Wadi Shab sits about 2 hours from Muscat, and the drive itself carries you through Omani villages and along the rugged coastline. Once you arrive, a small fishing boat is the only way in. You cross the wadi by water before stepping onto the canyon floor. The walls rise on both sides, and as you walk deeper, the canyon narrows and the rock formations shift. The water stays clear enough to see the bottom.
The Keyhole is the centerpiece. It's a small opening in the rock face that opens into a cave, and the only way through is to swim into one of the pools, then dive into the narrow passage itself. Inside, a waterfall drops from above. If swimming through tight spaces isn't for you, the wadi has plenty of hiking and exploring along the canyon floor and through hidden streams, so you're not locked into one activity. Your guide leads the way and knows which routes suit the day's conditions.
After Wadi Shab, you stop at Bimmah Sinkhole, a water-filled depression in the limestone where you can swim again in clear water surrounded by dramatic rock walls. Lunch happens at a local restaurant between the two sites. The full day runs 7 to 8 hours, and you return to your hotel by late afternoon.
