Step-by-step itinerary

Hiking and sightseeing at Jebel Shams

  • Depart Muscat early morning
  • Photo stop at Al Hamra views
  • Drive to top of Jebel Shams
  • Photo stop at grand canyon viewpoint
  • Complete Balcony Walk hike

The experience

The drive from Muscat covers 240 kilometers to reach Jebel Shams, the highest point in the Hajar range. You'll stop at Al Hamra, one of Oman's best-preserved old towns, where narrow alleyways wind between traditional mudbrick buildings: a quick photo stop before continuing upward. Once at the peak, you stand at the spot that receives sunrise first in the country, and the guide positions you there before the hike to take in the scale of what lies ahead.

The Balcony Walk itself is a 5.2-mile out-and-back trail that hugs the canyon edge. The route is moderately challenging and takes an average of 4 hours and 33 minutes to complete. You're walking along the rim with the canyon dropping away on one side, and the trail descends gradually toward an abandoned village nested at the far end. The guide sets the pace and knows where the footing shifts or where the views open up widest.

The full day runs 8 to 9 hours from pickup to drop-off anywhere in Muscat. You'll have bottled water throughout, and the 4WD vehicle handles the steep approach to the trailhead. Lunch is not included, so plan to bring or purchase food in Al Hamra or pack something for the hike itself. The guide speaks English and Arabic, and children from age 5 are welcome on the hike if they have moderate fitness for the distance and elevation.

How long does the actual hiking take on the Balcony Walk?

What is the abandoned village at the end of the Balcony Walk?

The trail descends toward a village at the canyon's far end that has been abandoned. The guide will tell you its history as you approach, and it marks the turnaround point before you retrace the route back to the trailhead.

Why is Jebel Shams called the mountain that sees sunrise first?

Jebel Shams is Oman's highest peak, and its elevation means it catches the sun before anywhere else in the country. The guide positions you at the top before the hike to witness this, weather permitting.
