The experience

Your guide picks you up at 7:30 AM and drives three hours from Muscat to Jabal Shams in an air-conditioned 4WD, stopping at a fuel station along the way for water or a hot drink. The first stop is Wadi Ghul village, a 2,000-year-old settlement built of solid stone and abandoned by its inhabitants, visible at the foot of Mountain Ghul on the approach. From the viewpoint at Jabal Shams, you can see the trail ahead before the short drive to the trekking start.

The Balcony Walk follows the W6 trail for approximately four hours, hugging the canyon edge with views into several wadis and the stunning valleys below. The path leads to Al Sab, the very old abandoned village at the canyon's base. The trek is the core of the day: a moderate hike on a defined trail with the geological layers of the Grand Canyon visible all around you.

Lunch and snacks are provided during the trek. Bottled water is carried throughout. The full day runs nine to ten hours from pickup to drop-off, so you return to your hotel in the late afternoon. A moderate level of fitness is needed for the four-hour walk, and children from age five are welcome on the trek.

What’s included
