The experience
The first day moves through three distinct wadis before reaching the desert. You start with a quick stop at Bimmah Sinkhole, then drive to Wadi Shab, where a 35-minute hike takes you up through a palm-lined canyon to a series of crystal-clear pools. You swim from pool to pool through warm water, arriving at the final one where an opening in the rocks leads into a cave with a small waterfall. Sunlight filters through, turning the water turquoise. After Wadi Shab, a photo stop at Wadi Tiwi shows the lush plantations that give it a greener feel than the surrounding desert landscape.
The afternoon drive takes you off-road into Wahiba Sands, where endless stretches of towering sand dunes make up the Omani desert. You spend the night at either Desert Rose Camp or Al Salam Camp, included in the tour price. Dinner and breakfast are provided, and your room is a standard double (or configured for your group size: extra bed for three people, or single for one).
Day two begins with sunrise viewing near the camp, then a visit to a Bedouin house where you can have coffee and Omani dates with the family if available. The drive to Wadi Bani Khalid follows, one of Oman's largest and most scenic wadis. A short walk leads to the emerald pools where you can swim, sunbathe or picnic in the canyon setting before the return drive to Muscat. Bottled water is provided throughout, and your English-speaking guide handles all logistics and commentary.
