The experience
The tour leaves Muscat heading south along the coast toward Quriyat, then inland to Wadi Shab. Once there, you walk an easy trail down through the canyon past green terraced gardens, taking about 40 minutes to reach the first pools. The water is clear enough to see the bottom, and the hike itself is the main physical part of the day: sturdy, non-slip shoes matter here because the path can be wet and uneven.
At Wadi Shab, you swim in 2–3 pools and have the chance to navigate through a narrow keyhole opening into a cave. Inside is a waterfall and a pool beneath it, which is the centerpiece of the trip. This is where most people spend time swimming and exploring. After Wadi Shab, the tour stops at Bimmah Sinkhole, a large crater near the sea with a lake at the bottom, believed to have been created by a meteor and known locally as Hawaiyat Najm, "The Falling Star." A staircase leads down to the water if you want to look closer. The final stop is Fins Beach, a white pebbly beach with striking blue water.
The whole day runs 8 to 9 hours including travel time. You're picked up from your Muscat hotel and dropped back there at the end. An English-speaking guide travels with the group, and bottled water is provided throughout. Bring swimwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes. The guide will tell you what else to pack when you book.
