The Experience

I felt a bit lost in the best way as soon as we passed under Bab Bou Jeloud — the Blue Gate really is that blue, by the way. There’s something about Fez that makes you slow down; maybe it’s the way the morning light bounces off those old walls or how everyone seems to know exactly where they’re going except you.

Bou Inania Madrasa was quieter than I expected. Youssef pointed out tiny details in the woodwork — honestly, I would’ve missed half of them if he hadn’t stopped me. The air smelled faintly of cedar and dust. At Kairaouine Mosque, you can’t go inside unless you’re Muslim, but just standing near those green-tiled roofs felt heavy with history. I tried repeating the name (“Qarawiyyin,” right?) and probably butchered it; Youssef laughed anyway.

We ducked into Dar Batha Museum for a bit — cool shade and old ceramics everywhere, some chipped but still beautiful. By then my feet were tired and my head was full of patterns and stories. The last stop was Jardin Jnan Sbil, which felt like someone had turned down all the noise for a minute. Birds, water trickling somewhere, a breeze that actually smelled green (if that makes sense). It’s funny how quickly you get used to being surrounded by chaos and then suddenly miss it.

The Royal Palace of Fez is massive — gold doors so bright they almost hurt your eyes in the sun. You can’t go inside but just standing there with our small group made me feel tiny and curious all over again. I still think about that view sometimes: sun on tiles, voices echoing behind us, Youssef telling one last story before we wandered back toward the medina.
