The experience

The walk starts at Bab Boujloud, the Blue Gate, and moves through the medina's narrow streets and souks where copper artisans, carpet makers, and ceramicists still work by hand. You'll see the Chouara Tanneries, where leather is dyed in the same stone vats used for centuries, and the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts. The route passes through Seffarine Square, where metalworkers hammer traditional wares, and reaches the Al Karaouiyine Mosque and University, one of the world's oldest institutions of learning. A licensed local guide leads the way and explains what you're standing in front of (the architecture, the crafts, the layers of history) without the noise of a group tour.

After the medina walk, the tour shifts to a car for the ramparts circuit. You'll drive past the Royal Palace Gate with its golden doors and mosaic details, through the Mellah (the historic Jewish Quarter), and stop at a traditional ceramics workshop to watch how Fez's blue pottery is made. The tour ends at Borj Sud Viewpoint, where the old city spreads below you. The light is best for photos in the late afternoon.
