The experience

The tour starts at your riad or hotel with pickup, then moves into the Medina on foot. Your guide leads you through the winding streets to Bab Bou Jeloud, the iconic blue and green gate that marks the entrance to the old city, and from there into the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, where you'll see the Ibn Danan synagogue built in the 17th century. The route takes you past the Kings Palace and up to the Merindes Tops and Borj North and South, where the city spreads out below you.

The Chouara Tannery is one of the oldest and largest in Fez. A working operation where leather is still dyed in stone vats the way it has been for centuries. You'll also visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture from 1350–56, and the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a religious school from 1325 with intricate tilework and carved wood. The Nejjarine Museum sits inside a riad that shows off the city's traditional architecture. Your guide will point out the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II, a sacred shrine (though entry is restricted to Muslims), and explain its place in Fez's spiritual life. The Medina itself is the real draw: narrow streets lined with mosaic work, carved doors, and souks selling textiles, ceramics, and traditional crafts.
