The experience
The tour starts at your accommodation and moves through the Medina on foot, beginning at Bab Bou Jeloud, the gate famous for its green and blue ceramic tilework. From there you wander into the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, and see the 17th-century Ibn Danan synagogue before climbing to the Merindes Tops for a view across the city. The guide then leads you down into the souks and the working quarters of the Medina, where the pace is set by what you want to linger on.
The stops are built around what Fez actually makes and trades. You'll stand in Chouara Tannery, one of the oldest in the city, watching the leather workers in the vats; visit Place Seffarine, where metalworkers hammer out copper and brass teapots and trays by hand; and walk through Souk El Henna, the market for natural beauty products (henna, black soap, argan oil) shaded by ancient trees. The guide explains the craft and the history at each one, and you choose whether to move on or stay longer. Three of the madrasas on the route: Bou Inania (built 1350–56), Al-Attarine (1325) and the Museo Nejjarine in its riad, charge separate entry fees of 20 DH each, but the guide will tell you what each one is before you decide to go in.
Coffee or tea is included, served during the tour. The walk covers the Medina's main arteries and hidden corners, and you finish back at your hotel or riad. Four hours on foot means you cover ground without rushing, and the guide adjusts the route based on what interests you and how the crowds are moving through the streets that day.

What is Bab Bou Jeloud and why does the tour start there?
Bab Bou Jeloud is the main gate into the old Medina, decorated with striking green and blue ceramic tilework. It's the natural entry point and one of Fez's most recognizable landmarks, so the tour begins there to orient you before heading into the winding streets.
Can I enter the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II if I'm not Muslim?
The Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II is a sacred shrine in Fes el-Bali, and entry is restricted to Muslims. Your guide will show you the exterior and explain its spiritual significance to the city.
How much do the madrasa entries cost, and are they included?
Entry to Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Attarine Madrasa and Museo Nejjarine each costs 20 DH per person (roughly $2 USD). These are not included in the tour price, so you pay at each site if you choose to enter.
Is the walk difficult, and will we be climbing?
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels and covers the Medina's main routes on foot. There is climbing to the Merindes Tops for the panoramic view, but the pace is set by the group and the guide adjusts as needed.
What is Chouara Tannery, and what will I see there?
Chouara Tannery is one of Fez's oldest and largest leather tanneries, still operating with traditional methods. You'll see the workers in the large vats where hides are soaked and dyed, a centuries-old craft that defines the city's artisan heritage.
