The Experience

I barely had time to blink after the driver dropped me at Bab Bou Jeloud—the Blue Gate—before our guide, Hassan, was already waving us over. He grinned and handed out little bottles of water (it was warm even in the morning), then led us straight into the swirl of Fez Medina. The sounds hit first—clattering metal from coppersmiths, someone calling out “Balak!” as a donkey squeezed past. I kept losing sight of the sky between tiled arches and hanging carpets. Hassan pointed at a bakery window where round loaves cooled on burlap sacks. I wanted to stop for one but he just smiled, “Later—we’ll get you something sweet.”

We ducked into Bou Inania Madrasa next. The air inside felt cool and heavy with old wood polish; my shoes squeaked on the tiles. Hassan explained some history—14th century, sultans, students—but I got distracted by the way sunlight slid across the carved stucco. There was a moment where it went quiet except for birds outside. At Nejjarine Square, we watched an old man pour tea for his friends under the cedar roof of the fondouk (I think I stared too long—they waved me over but I chickened out). My favorite bit might’ve been when we peeked through a doorway at Kairaouine Mosque—the world’s oldest university still running, apparently—and caught a whiff of mint from someone’s bag nearby.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much in a place this ancient. Hassan tried to teach us how to say “thank you” in Darija; I mangled it pretty badly and he just shook his head, still smiling. We passed stalls selling argan cream and little glass perfume bottles—one shopkeeper dabbed something spicy on my wrist that lingered all afternoon. The Chouara tannery was wild: colors everywhere, sharp smell that honestly made my eyes water (they hand you mint leaves for that). By the time we reached Al-Attarine Madrasa, my feet were tired but I didn’t really want to leave yet.
