The Experience

The tour starts at your accommodation in Fez, where your guide meets you before heading into the Medina. You'll begin at Bab Bou Jeloud, the gate famous for its green and blue tilework, then move through the Mellah to see the 17th-century Ibn Danan synagogue and the Kings Palace. The route takes you to the Merindes Tops for views across the city, then down into the working heart of the Medina—the souks, the tanneries, the workshops—before returning you to your hotel or riad.

The stops themselves are the point. You'll stand in front of the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a religious school from 1325 with a courtyard built around water and carved cedar (entry is 20 DH). You'll watch leather being dyed at Chouara Tannery using methods unchanged for centuries. You'll walk through Souk Attarine, where the air is thick with spice, and Souk Sebaghine, where the dyers' market still operates in the same narrow lanes. The guide explains what you're looking at—the architecture, the trade, the history—as you move through, and can answer questions about what's for sale or how something works.

The tour runs three to four hours, with coffee or tea included partway through. Your guide speaks English, so the commentary is clear. Because it's private, the pace is yours: you can linger at a workshop or move on. Hotel pickup and drop-off mean you don't arrange transport to the Medina's edge or figure out how to get back.

Is this one for you?The private format and English-speaking guide mean you follow the commentary without a group around you, and the fixed pickup time removes the need to find your way to the Medina's entrance on your own. Book this if you want the history and context explained as you walk, rather than wandering on your own.
