The Experience

I’ll never forget the first few minutes in the Fes medina—my shoes sticking a little to the uneven stones, the air thick with spices and something sharper (which I later realized was from the tanneries). Our guide Youssef met us right at our riad door, grinning like he knew exactly what was coming for us. He led us straight into a swirl of voices and colors. I almost lost track of time just watching an old man pile oranges into a pyramid that kept wobbling but never fell.

We ducked through Bab Bou Jeloud—the blue gate—and Youssef pointed out how one side is blue for Fes and the other green for Islam. I probably looked confused because he laughed and told me it’s normal to feel lost here; even locals get turned around sometimes. The narrow alleys felt endless, but somehow he always knew when to turn left or right. We stopped by Bou Inania Madrasa (I fumbled with my dirhams at the entrance) and stood quietly under carved cedar ceilings while sunlight slanted in dusty beams. There was this hush—just birds outside and someone sweeping somewhere nearby.

The Chouara Tannery hit me hardest. Youssef handed us sprigs of mint “for your nose,” which made me laugh until I realized why. The smell is… well, it’s real. But watching men work waist-deep in vats of dye—yellows, reds, browns—felt weirdly timeless. One guy waved up at us from below; his hands were stained every color you can imagine. After that we wandered into a woodworker’s shop near Nejjarine Museum, where I tried (badly) to say “thank you” in Arabic—got a big smile anyway.

Somewhere between the Royal Palace gates (so gold they hurt my eyes in the sun) and Jnan Sbil Garden where we finally sat down for mint tea under palm trees, I realized how much of Fes is about small moments—the clatter of copper being hammered behind half-open doors, kids darting past with bread balanced on trays, Youssef quietly steering us away from a donkey cart barreling through. My feet were sore by then but honestly? I still think about that view from Borj Sud at sunset—rooftops glowing pinkish-orange over a city that never really slows down.
