Discover Scuba Diving is a full-day beginner certification in Tulamben, Bali, where you learn to breathe underwater and dive two sites with a certified instructor. Hotel pickup from Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua or Ubud is included. The course runs through a short briefing, shallow-water confidence drills, a dive at Coral Garden, a rest break with lunch, then a dive to the USAT Liberty shipwreck at 12 meters depth. Children from age 10 are welcome, and the day ends with your return to the hotel.

The experience

Eleven hours sounds long until you realize how much of it is travel, instruction and the time it takes to feel comfortable in a new environment. The day starts with pickup from your hotel in the morning. Once at the dive center in Tulamben, a certified instructor walks you through the basics: how to breathe, how to equalize pressure, how to move with the gear on. None of it happens fast, and that is the point: the learning curve is progressive, and you do not move to deeper water until you are ready.

Your first dive is at Coral Garden, a shallow site where you can stand if you need to. Here you practice the skills the briefing covered: putting on your equipment, moving underwater, staying calm. The site itself is an enormous aquarium. The reef and fish life are real, but your focus is on the mechanics of diving, not sightseeing. After you surface and return to the dive center, there is time to rest, change, and eat. Lunch and tea or coffee are included.

The second dive takes you to the USAT Liberty shipwreck, a 120-meter cargo ship that sank in 1942 and now sits in 12 meters of water off the Tulamben coast. By this point you have already logged one dive and practiced the skills. The wreck becomes the reward for the work. The maximum depth keeps the dive safe for a beginner, and the structure of the wreck (the hull, the holds, the railings) gives you something to navigate around and explore. After surfacing, you head back to the dive center, shower, and get driven back to your hotel.

Can I do this dive if I've never been underwater before?

Yes, the Discover Scuba course is designed for complete beginners with no prior experience. The instructor starts in shallow water where you can stand, runs through the basics, and only moves deeper once you are comfortable with the equipment and breathing technique.

What's the USAT Liberty shipwreck like at 12 meters?

The USAT Liberty is a 120-meter cargo ship that rests upright on the seafloor. At 12 meters depth, you can explore the hull and upper structure with your instructor. The wreck gives you real underwater geography to navigate and observe, rather than just open water.

Do I need to bring my own diving gear?

No. All SCUBA equipment is provided: wetsuit, tank, regulator, buoyancy control device, mask and fins. The dive center also has facilities including a shower, locker and change room.

What if I'm staying in Kuta or Seminyak instead of Tulamben?

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for guests staying in Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Ubud or the surrounding areas. Tell the operator your hotel name and address when you book, and the driver will collect you in the morning and return you after the dives.

What's included in the price?
