The ferry leaves Sanur at 7:15 AM — and your driver's already holding a sign with your name

You get picked up from your hotel, ferried to Nusa Penida, and guided through Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay, Manta Bay, and Angel's Billabong with snorkeling gear and an underwater camera included. The driver handles the ferry timing and the boat captain knows where the mantas are most likely to appear. You're back at your hotel by evening without having booked separate transport, equipment rental, or a guide.

The Experience

The boat ride to Nusa Penida takes about 30 minutes, and yeah, it can get a bit choppy depending on the day. But that's also why you're not figuring out the ferry schedule yourself or standing in a queue at the harbor — your guide meets you at Toyapakeh and handles the rest. From there, the day splits between two things: the beaches you see from above, and the water you actually get into. Kelingking Beach is the one everyone photographs — a T-shaped strip of sand tucked under cliffs so steep that the only way down is a staircase carved into the rock, and even that's not for everyone. You get the view from the top, which is the part most people come for anyway.

The snorkeling happens at three separate spots: Crystal Bay first, where the coral is still mostly intact and the reef fish are thick enough that you'll see them without looking hard; then Manta Bay in the southwest, where the stingrays actually show up (they're harmless, just enormous — up to seven meters); and Gamat Bay if the conditions allow it, though the currents there are strong enough that your guide will make the call on the water. You get the snorkel gear, the mask, the fins, and an underwater camera if you want to grab shots. The boat stops at each spot for maybe 45 minutes to an hour, so you're not rushed, but you're also not drifting around all day.

After the water, there's Angel's Billabong — a natural pool trapped between the cliffs where the seawater cycles in and out with the waves, turning the water these impossible shades of green and blue depending on the light and the minerals in the rock. It's small, it's strange, and it's exactly the kind of thing you'd miss if you were trying to navigate the island alone. The whole day wraps up when the boat leaves Banjar harbor at 4:30 PM, getting you back to Sanur by late afternoon and dropped at your hotel. It's a full day — you're moving between five or six stops — but it's structured enough that you're not making decisions about where to go next.

Top questions

What time does the tour start and end?
Departure is 7:15 AM from Sanur harbor. The return ferry leaves Nusa Penida at 4:30 PM, arriving back at Sanur in the late afternoon. Total time is roughly 9–10 hours including the ferry crossings.
Is snorkeling equipment included?
Yes. Mask, fins, life jacket, and an underwater camera are all provided. You just need to bring a swimsuit and a towel.
How rough is the boat ride?
The ferry crossing takes about 30 minutes each way. The sea can be choppy depending on the day and season. If you're prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding.
Can I actually swim at Kelingking Beach?
The beach is accessible only by a steep staircase carved into the cliff. You can reach the sand and swim, but it's a demanding climb back up. Most people visit for the view from the top instead.
What are the chances of seeing manta rays at Manta Bay?
Manta sightings are common but not guaranteed. The guide will choose the snorkeling spots based on current conditions and recent activity. If mantas don't appear, you'll still see coral and reef fish at the other bays.
Is this tour suitable for non-swimmers?
Snorkeling requires comfort in the water and the ability to wear a mask and breathe through a snorkel. A life jacket is provided, but if you're not confident in the water, let your guide know before entering.
How many people are on the boat?
This is a private tour, so it's just your group. The snorkeling boat is shared with other private groups on the same day, but your guide and transport are dedicated to you.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen, a hat, a light cover-up, and a dry bag for your phone and valuables. The sun reflects off the water and the rock, so protection is important. Bring cash if you want to buy drinks or snacks on the island.
Is there a lunch break?
Lunch is not mentioned in the itinerary. Bring snacks or eat before the tour, or ask your guide about food options on the island when you arrive.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If the ferry cannot run due to rough seas, the tour will be rescheduled. Check the weather forecast for the day and confirm with your operator the evening before.
