The Experience

I’ll never forget how our Egyptologist, Ahmed, greeted us at Cairo Airport—he just smiled and handed me a tiny cup of cardamom coffee before I’d even found my bag. “You look tired,” he said, which was true. That first night was mostly a blur of city lights and car horns, but Ahmed made sure we knew exactly what to expect the next morning. I remember thinking: I’m actually here. In Egypt.

The next day at the Giza Pyramids, it hit me—these blocks are huge. Standing under the shadow of Khufu’s pyramid felt surreal, and there was this weird quiet despite all the visitors. Ahmed told us stories about the workers who built them (not slaves, apparently), and my partner tried to pronounce “Khafre” correctly—Ahmed laughed and gave up trying to teach us after three attempts. We saw the Sphinx too; its face is more weathered than photos show. Lunch near the Grand Egyptian Museum tasted like cumin and lemon—simple but good. I still think about that view from the panoramic spot where all three pyramids line up.

Flying south to Aswan felt like entering another country altogether—softer air, slower pace on the Nile banks. The High Dam is massive but honestly I was more interested in Philae Temple. You reach it by boat; the water smells different there, almost sweet? Onboard our Nile cruise that evening, we watched kids waving from little boats as we drifted past. The cabins were comfortable (I slept like a rock), but it’s those glimpses of river life that stuck with me.

We stopped at Kom Ombo Temple early—crocodile mummies inside, which I didn’t expect—and then Edfu later that day. Between temples you just watch green fields slide by under this big blue sky. By the time we reached Luxor for the Valley of the Kings, I felt both exhausted and sort of amazed at how much history fits into seven days. Walking through Hatshepsut’s terraces while Ahmed explained her story… well, you can feel how old everything is in your bones.
