The experience

Day one moves through three pyramid fields south and west of Cairo. You start at Giza, where the tour takes you around the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and to the Great Sphinx carved from a single limestone block. Your guide explains how they were built, their alignment and the pharaohs they honor. A 30-minute camel ride on the plateau gives you the scale of the desert and the monuments. From there the route heads to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, the world's first large-scale stone structure, sits in a vast necropolis surrounded by the tombs and carvings that shaped all later pyramid design. The day ends at Dahshur, quieter than Giza, where the Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid show how Fourth Dynasty builders experimented with angles and perfected smooth-sided construction. You return to your hotel with dinner overlooking the pyramids.

Day two shifts to Cairo's museums and markets. The Grand Egyptian Museum opens with thousands of artifacts displayed for the first time, and the complete collection of King Tutankhamun arranged to show his life and treasures. Colossal statues, carved sarcophagi and relics span 5,000 years. After the museum, you move into Old Cairo's narrow lanes to the Hanging Church (one of Egypt's oldest Coptic landmarks, suspended above the Roman fortress of Babylon), where wooden screens filter light onto marble inlays and icons. The surrounding quarter holds centuries-old synagogues, mosques and quiet courtyards. The evening brings a Nile River dinner cruise with belly dancing and a Tannoura show.
