The experience

Day one starts at the Giza Pyramids (Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos), where you stand at the Valley Temple, the place where priests mummified the dead bodies of pharaohs. From there you get a close-up view of the Great Sphinx, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of King Chephren. The guide then drives you 27 km southwest to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid built for King Zoser, a crucial moment in pyramid evolution from simple mastaba to the form that defined the kingdom. The day ends at Dahshur, where the Old and Middle Kingdom pharaohs chose a rocky plateau to build their tombs, including the first pyramid of Sneferu, founder of the 4th Dynasty.

Day two moves into Cairo's Islamic and modern heritage. The Egyptian Museum holds over 125,000 monuments dating back to Egypt's oldest eras, including the golden mask of King Tutankhamen. Next is the Cairo Citadel, one of Egypt's oldest fortifications, built by Salah El Din El Ayyubi. Inside it stands the Muhammad Ali Mosque, also called the Alabaster Mosque for the stone that covers its walls: commissioned between 1830 and 1848. The tour then takes you through the Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassa, regarded as the finest early Mamluk architecture in Cairo, built between 1356 and 1363 with soaring vaulted halls surrounding a peaceful courtyard. The day ends in Khan el-Khalili, the medieval-style bazaar where narrow lanes are lined with shops selling everything from semiprecious stones to alabaster pyramids. Most vendors stay open well into the evening.

Your guide is a multilingual Egyptologist who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language. Transport is in an air-conditioned vehicle with pickup from your hotel. All entrance fees are covered, and you stay one night in a Cairo hotel on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Children from age 6 are welcome.
