The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the dry morning air as we pulled up near the Giza Plateau—there’s this faint scent of sand and diesel from the tour buses, but it fades once you’re standing in front of Cheops’ pyramid. Our Egyptologist guide, Hossam, pointed out tiny details I’d never have noticed alone—the way the stones fit together without mortar, or how the Sphinx’s face has weathered over centuries. You can actually see camel handlers chatting nearby, waiting for tourists who want that classic photo. We wandered around Memphis and Saqqara next; the Step Pyramid looks almost otherworldly in the midday sun, and there’s a quietness out here you don’t get in central Cairo. Dahshur was less crowded—just us and a couple of local kids selling cold water by the entrance. The Bent Pyramid’s odd angles make it stand out against the flat landscape.

The next day started early with a walk through the Egyptian Museum—honestly, you could spend hours just on King Tut’s treasures alone. The golden mask is smaller than I expected but somehow more striking up close. Later at the Citadel, we ducked into the Alabaster Mosque right as noon prayers finished; there’s this echo inside that makes every footstep sound important. The view over Cairo from up there is hazy but impressive—you can spot satellite dishes on every rooftop. Down in Khan El Khalili bazaar, it’s all noise and color: vendors calling out prices for spices or fake papyrus art, little cafés tucked between gold shops where we grabbed mint tea to cool off. Our guide led us down Sharia Al Muizz too—so many minarets overhead you lose count—and into Sultan Hassan Mosque, where sunlight filters through high windows onto old stone floors.
