The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel at a time you arrange. Day one starts at the Giza Pyramids, where you spend two hours visiting the Great Pyramid of Khufu, then move to a panoramic viewpoint of all three pyramids and the Sphinx. From there the drive goes south to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Pyramid of King Teti and a royal tomb, then continues to Memphis, Egypt's first capital, where you explore the remains of the ancient city before returning to your hotel.

Day two begins with a 7:00 am pickup for the 2.5-hour drive to Alexandria. You visit the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, a three-level tomb where Greek, Roman and Egyptian art carved into the stone still stands after nearly two thousand years. Next is Pompey's Pillar, a 25-meter column of red Aswan granite that once stood in the Serapheum Temple. You then tour Qaitbay Citadel, built in the 15th century where the ancient lighthouse once stood, and finish at the Alexandrian Library before the drive back to Cairo.

Day three focuses on the religious heart of Cairo. After an 8:30 am pickup, you spend two hours at the Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo learning about ancient Egyptian civilization. Then you move into Old Cairo to visit three churches: the Hanging Church (built on the remains of a Roman fortress tower), Abu Sergia Church (which holds a cave where the Holy Family sheltered), and St. George Church, plus the Ben Ezra Synagogue. The Citadel of Saladin comes next: the largest citadel in the world, positioned on Cairo's highest eastern point, where you see the Alabaster Mosque and views across the entire city. You finish by walking Khan el-Khalili, the oldest Islamic bazaar, where ancient mosques, schools and monuments line the street and you can bargain for souvenirs before returning to your hotel.
