The Experience
The first thing I noticed wasn’t the heat or the emptiness — it was the crunch of sand under our boots when we finally stepped out at Bahariya Oasis after hours watching the road blur past outside Cairo. Our driver, Mahmoud, handed me a cup of tea that smelled faintly sweet, like mint and something I couldn’t name. He grinned when I tried to thank him in Arabic (probably butchered it), but he just laughed and waved us on toward lunch — simple bread, rice, roasted chicken. Maybe it was hunger or just being somewhere so far from home, but it tasted better than most things I’ve eaten lately.
After that we drove into the Black Desert. It really does look like another planet — those dark volcanic hills rising out of gold sand. The wind picked up as we climbed a low ridge; I got grit in my teeth and laughed because there’s no way to look cool spitting sand. Mahmoud pointed out Crystal Mountain next — honestly, I didn’t expect much, but when you see sunlight catch those quartz veins… it’s like someone spilled sugar across stone. We stopped to run our hands over them; they felt cold and sharp even with the sun overhead.
The White Desert is stranger still. Chalk towers everywhere — some shaped like mushrooms or camels (Mahmoud swore one looked like his uncle). We set up camp just before sunset. The light turned everything pink for about five minutes. Dinner was cooked right there: smoky lamb stew and flatbread still warm from the fire. There was this quiet after everyone finished eating — not awkward, just peaceful, with only wind and someone humming softly near the tents. Lying back on the sand later, staring up at more stars than I’ve ever seen… I still think about that view sometimes.
