The Experience

“Did you ever try sleeping in the middle of nowhere?” That’s what our guide, Mahmoud, asked as we bumped along outside Bahariya Oasis. I just laughed—my answer was obvious. The drive from Cairo was longer than I expected (I might’ve dozed off a bit), but when we finally stopped for tea at the oasis, it felt like stepping into a different world. The air smelled faintly sweet—like date palms and dust—and there was this quiet hum from a group of kids playing nearby. We stretched our legs before heading out again, deeper into Egypt’s Black Desert.

The first thing that hit me about the Black Desert was how silent it is. You’d think black volcanic hills would feel harsh or dead, but they’re weirdly soft underfoot—almost sandy, not sharp like I pictured.
