The Experience
The day starts with a 4am pickup in Cairo and a 150-mile drive south in an air-conditioned vehicle. Once you reach Bahariya Oasis, you switch to an open-air jeep for the desert itself. The first stop is the Black Desert, a landscape of dark volcanic rock and ridges, followed by El Hez Village where cold springs let you cool off before lunch. From there the route heads to Crystal Mountain and the Agabat area, then splits between the Old White Desert—a formation of chalk pillars that look like mushrooms and tents—and the New White Desert, where limestone shapes rise from pale sand in every direction.
Camp sits in the New White Desert. Dinner is a barbecue cooked over a fire, and the night includes stargazing with no light pollution between you and the sky. You sleep in the desert camp (not a hotel), which is included in the price. Morning brings a sunrise, a hot breakfast in camp, then a jeep drive back to Bahariya Oasis. If you request it in advance, the tour operator can arrange a stop at the hot springs before the return to Cairo—a soak before the final 150-mile drive home.
The tour runs with a live guide who speaks your language (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or seven others). All park entry fees, the bottled water during the day, and transport in both the air-conditioned car and the open jeep are included. You'll need to share a soft copy of your passport at least 24 hours before the tour date so the operator can issue the desert permits.
