You’ll travel deep into Egypt’s Western Desert—exploring Bahariya Oasis, climbing ancient tombs, camping under stars in the White Desert, and seeing landscapes you won’t find anywhere else. If you want real adventure with local flavor (and don’t mind getting a little sand everywhere), this tour delivers.
The day started before sunrise—Cairo was still half asleep as we piled into the van with our guide, Ahmed. The drive out to Bahariya Oasis took about four hours. It’s a long stretch, but the scenery shifts from city buzz to open desert pretty quickly. When we finally rolled into Bahariya, I could smell the faint sweetness of date palms in the air. Lunch was simple but filling—flatbread, grilled chicken, and some tangy pickles at a local spot that Ahmed swears by.
After lunch, we headed straight for the Black Desert. The ground here is covered in dark volcanic stones—almost like someone scattered charcoal everywhere. At El Haize (locals call it St. George Oasis), there’s a natural hot spring where you can dip your hands in warm water that smells faintly of minerals. Crystal Mountain was next—a quick stop to see quartz crystals glinting in the sun. We bumped along rough tracks through Agabat Valley; the rock shapes here look like something from another planet.
The real highlight? The White Desert National Park. Wind has carved huge chalk formations into wild shapes—some look like giant mushrooms or weird animals if you squint just right. As dusk settled in, we set up camp under a sky so clear you could count every star. Dinner was cooked over an open fire; nothing fancy, but after a day outside it tasted perfect.
Waking up in the desert is something else—the silence is almost total except for a few birds calling out at sunrise. After breakfast (tea and bread warmed over last night’s coals), we drove back toward Bahariya to check out the Golden Mummy showroom and two nobles’ tombs from Egypt’s 26th dynasty. There’s real history here—you can still see painted walls inside Bannantiu’s tomb if you bring a flashlight.
Before heading back to Cairo, Ahmed convinced us to climb Black Mountain for one last view over the oasis. It’s not too tough of a climb, but watch your step on loose stones! Lunch back in town wrapped things up—then it was time for the long ride home, sandy shoes and all.
Yes, tents and all necessary camping gear are included for your stay under the stars.
