The Experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza and a four-hour drive by sharing bus to Bahariya Oasis, where you stop for lunch at a local restaurant. From there, a shared 4x4 with a Bedouin driver takes over. You'll explore Bawiti, Bahariya's main village, set among palm groves against massive dunes, then climb English Mountain to see the remains of a British World War I outpost. The route passes through the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain before heading into White Desert National Park itself.
The White Desert's defining feature is its wind-eroded rock formations—spires, mushrooms, animals and other shapes carved into brilliant white stone. You drive through the Agabat Valley's huge rounded boulders and into the park to find your camp. Dinner is a barbecue under the stars; you sleep on a mattress in a tent with a sleeping bag. Morning brings desert silence and breakfast before the 4x4 returns you to Bahariya, then the sharing bus takes you back to Cairo and your hotel.
The tour runs daily and suits travelers with at least moderate fitness; comfortable walking shoes and light clothing are essential, as are sunscreen and a hat. Bring toilet wipes, since there are no facilities in the desert. A valid passport is required on the day of travel, and your nationality must be confirmed at booking. Spinal injuries are not recommended for this trip.
