The Experience
The drive from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis takes about five hours. Once you arrive, lunch is ready, then a jeep and guide take you into the desert. Day one moves through the Black Desert first—darker volcanic rock and sand—then El Hez village and a cold spring, followed by Crystal Mountain and the Agabat area. The route continues to the old White Desert, where mushroom-shaped rock formations rise from the sand, and then to the new White Desert with its pale limestone cliffs and formations. By late afternoon, the guide finds a spot to set up camp for the night.
Dinner is a BBQ cooked in the desert, and you sleep in a tent under the open sky. The Bedouin guide has roamed this region for generations and knows the landscape and the best places to stop. On day two, after breakfast, you finish any sights you missed the first day, then drive back to Bahariya Oasis and return to Cairo. The jeep ride is part of the tour, so transport between Cairo and the desert is arranged; you don't navigate or drive yourself.
The tour includes camping accommodation in the desert, all meals (lunch on day one, dinner, breakfast on day two), and the jeep safari with a guide who speaks English and Arabic. The remaining time is split between driving, hikes, and the camp itself. This is not recommended if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, but it suits all other fitness levels.
