experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the warm air as I stepped out of Cairo International Airport—kind of dusty, but not unpleasant. A friendly face from the team was waiting right by arrivals, holding a sign with my name. She helped me get my bags sorted and chatted about her favorite local coffee spot (apparently, you can’t skip Ahwa in Garden City). After a quick drive through the city’s evening traffic—horns everywhere—we met our private Egyptologist guide. She was easy to talk to and knew all the little tricks for getting around. Once checked in at the hotel, I finally got to kick off my shoes and breathe after a long flight.

Next morning started early. The Giza Pyramids look different in person—bigger than you expect and somehow quieter if you get there before the big crowds roll in. Our guide pointed out how the sunlight hits Khufu’s pyramid just right at 8am. We wandered around, dodging a few persistent camel guys (they’re harmless if you just smile and keep walking). Saqqara was next—a bit less crowded, with that famous step pyramid rising above the sand. You can actually smell fresh bread from a nearby vendor if you’re paying attention. Memphis felt like an open-air museum; seeing the Colossus of Ramses II up close is something else—it’s massive and has this worn look that photos never capture.

Day three was all about Cairo’s history. The Egyptian Museum is busy but worth it—so many artifacts packed into one place. Our guide showed us Tutankhamun’s gold mask; it really does shine under those old lights. Later on, we climbed up to the Citadel of Saladin where you catch a hazy view over Cairo’s rooftops (and hear calls to prayer echoing). The Mohammad Ali Mosque inside is cool and calm—marble floors are cold even when it’s hot outside. We finished at Khan El-Khalili bazaar; it’s noisy and colorful, with shopkeepers calling out deals on spices or scarves. I grabbed a mint tea at Fishawi Café just to watch people go by.

The last day came too soon. After breakfast—flatbread with honey—I packed up while listening to street sounds drifting up from below. The same staff member who welcomed me took care of airport drop-off; she even helped me find my gate when I got turned around inside departures.
