The experience

The moment you step out of Cairo airport, a representative is waiting with your name on a sign. No hunting for a taxi, no negotiating a fare. You're picked up and driven straight to lunch at a traditional Egyptian restaurant, then to your 5-star hotel. By evening you're on a Nile cruise ship watching folklore performances while the river moves beneath you. That's the rhythm of this 8-day tour: everything arranged, nothing left to figure out.

Day two takes you to the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx with a private guide, then on to Memphis and Saqqara. The Step Pyramid of Djoser is there, older than you'd expect and stranger too. Day three splits between Islamic Cairo (the Citadel built by Saladin in 1176, the Muhammad Ali Mosque with its alabaster walls) and Coptic Cairo (the Hanging Church, the Church of Saint George). A flight to Luxor on day four lands you at Karnak Temple, where three main temples and a thousand years of stone carvings sit in one vast complex. Your guide walks you through it, then you board the 5-star cruise ship for four nights sailing south.

Day five starts before dawn with a hot air balloon ride over Luxor: the west and east banks spread out below, the Nile splitting them in half. After landing, your guide takes you to the Valley of the Kings, where painted tombs hide inside a rocky gorge, then the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. The ship sails while you sleep. Day six brings Edfu's Temple of Horus and Kom Ombo's twin-god temple (one for Sobek the crocodile god, one for Horus). Day seven is the long one: an early morning drive to Abu Simbel, the massive temple Ramesses II carved into a cliff face and engineers moved stone by stone to save it from flooding. After that, the Temple of Philae and a felucca ride on the Nile at sunset. Day eight is the flight back to Cairo and home.
