The Experience

Day one takes you to Giza and south to Memphis. Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you to the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the Pyramid of Chephren and the Pyramid of Mycerinus, then to the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple. At the Giza Plateau, you can stop for photos—optional camel riding for 30 minutes is available if you want it. After lunch at a local restaurant, you head to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, the oldest stone structure ever built, then to the open-air museum in Memphis, about 20 minutes away.

Day two stays in Cairo. A two-hour visit to the Egyptian Museum shows you the treasures of King Tutankhamen—the only royal treasure found intact, with gold and jewelry spanning centuries. Next is the Citadel of Salah El Din and the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali inside it, a model of Ottoman architecture. After lunch, you explore Old Cairo's churches: the ancient Roman fortification of Babylon, the Hanging Church, the Church of St Sergius and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, built before the ninth century and transformed from Coptic to Jewish use over time. The day ends at Khan El Khalili, the oldest market in Egypt.

Day three is the drive to Alexandria, about two and a half hours north. You visit Pompey's Pillar, the only remaining pillar from a Roman temple standing on a rocky plateau, then the medieval Citadel of Qaitbay, which holds artifacts and maritime finds from Napoleon's fleet and Admiral Nelson's naval campaign in 1798. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa come next—three layers of tombs and chambers carved into rock underground, the last great construction built for the ancient Egyptian religion. After lunch, you see the Bibliotheca of Alexandria, founded in the 3rd century BC by Pharaoh Ptolemy I, before returning to Cairo.
