The experience

The tour begins at the Giza Plateau, where you'll see the Pyramids of Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinus alongside six queen pyramids: the only remaining wonder of the ancient world stands among them. From there, the route moves to Saqqara to visit the step pyramid, the first pyramid ever built in Egypt, then continues south to Dahshur to see the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, the oldest pyramids in the country. Your Egyptologist guide narrates the history and engineering of each site as you move through them, and lunch is included during the day.

Day two keeps you in Cairo. The Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square holds thousands of ancient artifacts, with the collection of Tutankhamun as its centerpiece. Next is the Citadel of Salah El-Din, where the alabaster mosque, built by Mohamed Ali, stands as one of Egypt's most striking religious structures. Lunch at a traditional restaurant breaks the afternoon before you reach Khan El Khalili Bazaar, the oldest and largest bazaar in the Middle East, where traders sell gold, silver, perfumes, copper, leather, and antiques. You return to your hotel in Cairo or Giza by evening.

On the final day, an air-conditioned vehicle drives you to Alexandria. The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, dug three levels underground, blend ancient Egyptian and Roman artistic styles in their tombs and chambers. After lunch, you visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and then Qaitbay Citadel, built on the site of the ancient lighthouse. The tour ends with your transfer back to the cruise ship or your final departure point. Throughout all three days, the felucca ride on the Nile, a traditional sail boat, offers a break from the structured itinerary and a different view of Cairo's waterfront.
