The Experience
The first real memory I have is the way the air changed as we stepped out of Cairo airport: warm, a little dusty, and somehow electric. Our guide, Amr, waved a sign with my name (he spelled it right!) and grinned like he’d been waiting just for us. That first night at Le Meridien I barely slept. My mind kept replaying his stories about the Nile being the “backbone of Egypt.” I could hear faint city sounds through the window (car horns, distant calls to prayer), and wondered if I’d really feel anything spiritual or if that was just marketing talk. Turns out, it’s something you can’t predict.
By day two we were flying south: Aswan is greener than I expected, palm trees everywhere along the water. The Philae Temple felt almost hidden in morning mist. Amr told us about Isis and rebirth. I tried to repeat “Khnum” after him and he laughed gently (I definitely butchered it). Later, on a felucca at sunset, the river went mirror-smooth and quiet except for kids giggling on the banks. It wasn’t perfect: I got sunburned on day five and mispronounced “Abydos” more times than I’ll admit.
