The Experience

I nearly lost my hat before we’d even started—the wind at Coral Pink Sand Dunes is no joke. Our guide, Mike, just grinned and handed it back with a “You’ll want to hold onto that.” The UTVs were already humming nearby, engines echoing against those wild pink hills. I’d seen photos but nothing really prepares you for the way the sand glows in the morning—almost like someone dialed up the color too far. We took off in a loose convoy, sand spraying everywhere, and I could taste it on my lips (not as bad as you’d think). There’s this weird mix of adrenaline and calm when you’re flying over dunes but also surrounded by so much empty space.

When we stopped at the base of the Coral Cliffs, Mike pointed out some lizard tracks—honestly, I wouldn’t have noticed them if he hadn’t. He explained how these dunes shift every year, which made me wonder how anyone ever finds their way around. The climb up to Coral Cave was steeper than it looked from below; there’s an easy hike option but most of us tried the via ferrata route (the metal rungs are cold in your hands at first). Inside the cave it smelled faintly of dust and sagebrush. Someone cracked a joke about bats but thankfully we didn’t see any—just sunlight pouring through that big “window” opening.

I hesitated before my first rappel. It’s one thing watching other people lean back into thin air—it’s another when it’s your turn. Mike double-checked my harness and said something about trust (I pretended not to hear him). The first few seconds are pure nerves but then it gets weirdly quiet except for your own shoes scraping rock. From halfway down you can see almost all of Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park—honestly, I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home. Some folks did all three rappels; I stuck with two and cheered for everyone else from below. Oh—and don’t forget to ask for that cave rappel photo. My hair is doing something wild in mine but I kind of love it.
