The experience

The sand dunes at Sand Hollow State Park are the centerpiece: rolling hills of sand that feel like they go on forever, and you're the one steering through them. The ride starts near Hurricane and takes you deep into Box Canyon, where towering red rock walls close in around you. A licensed guide leads the group, and the two-hour route includes the massive sand hill that sits at the heart of the canyon. The kind of obstacle that makes the adrenaline real.

You'll reach the top of Sand Hollow for a 360-degree view: Zion to the north, Hurricane cliffs to the east, the Arizona Strip to the south, and Pine Mountain and Snow Canyon to the west. The terrain shifts between red dirt trails, sand dunes and red sandstone, so the ride doesn't feel like one thing repeated. Box Canyon itself is only accessible by ATV, which means you're reaching a place most visitors to the region never see.

The vehicle is a two-person ATV (minimum two per machine), and helmets and goggles come with it. You get bottled water and ice for the ride, plus a premium damage waiver that covers the vehicle. Children from age 4 are welcome, and the pace suits all fitness levels. The challenge is the terrain and the sand hill, not endurance hiking or swimming.
