The experience

You start by riding UTVs straight into the dunes, moving through the landscape under your own control rather than watching from a passenger seat. The route includes a quick stop for a possible sighting of the "Sandsquatch" Bigfoot, then climbs to a bluff with views across the park before heading toward Coral Pink Slot Canyon on foot. That walk takes about five minutes to reach the canyon entrance.

The slot canyon itself, locals call it "Big Foot's Hideout", is a two-part passage you walk through for roughly twenty minutes. It is moderately sized, so the terrain is manageable for most people, and the canyon walls create the kind of narrow, layered rock formation that makes slot canyons distinctive. After you exit, you ride back out to Star Dune, one of the largest in the park, where you finish by sandboarding or sledding down the face of it. You can stand or sit on the sleds, so the descent works for different comfort levels.

The whole outing runs about two hours from start to finish. Bring a valid driver's license if you're 21 or older. That's the requirement to operate a UTV.
