Ride UTVs through Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park to The Window To the Dunes, where you climb a via ferrata course and rappel down cliffs of varying heights. The experience

You start by loading onto UTVs and riding through the dunes toward Coral Cave. The route is what the operator calls "fun and floaty": a direct path across sand toward The Window To the Dunes rappel spot. Once there, a short two-minute walk takes you into the cave where the climbing and rappelling setup waits.

The climbing piece uses a via ferrata course to get you to the cliff summit. If climbing does not appeal, hiking is the alternative route up. Either way, you reach the top with multiple rappel stations to choose from, each one a different height and difficulty level. Your guide hooks up your harness and walks you through each descent. Most people try more than one. If rappelling is not for you, you can stay at the base and watch the others come down.

The whole outing runs about two hours. Bottled water, UTVs, canyoneering harnesses and all rappelling gear come with the booking. Note that the park entrance fee ($15 per vehicle, subject to change) may apply depending on your option. Arrive on time: the operator runs multiple departures daily and cannot hold the group past 15 minutes past start. The park runs on Mountain Time, an hour ahead of Las Vegas and Arizona.

Can I rappel if I've never done it before?

Yes. Your guide sets up your harness, explains the technique and helps you descend. Multiple rappel heights let you start easy and work up to harder drops if you want to. Spectating is also fine if you change your mind once you're there.
