Summary

Climb iron paths in Kanab then descend by rappel after an ATV ride

You’ll zip through Kanab’s Cave Lakes Canyon by ATV with a local guide before tackling East Zion’s only Via Ferrata climb—metal rungs straight up sheer rock—and finish with a 180-foot rappel back down. Expect cold water at the summit, plenty of laughs (and nerves), plus stories from folks who know this land by heart.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We rolled up to Cave Lakes Canyon in Kanab, still shaking sleep out of our eyes, and suddenly there was this battered ATV waiting for us. The air smelled like sagebrush and dust—kind of sharp, but clean. Our guide, Tyler (he grew up around here), handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew what was coming. That first jolt as we zipped up the canyon trail—honestly, I almost lost my hat. We bounced past these weirdly beautiful lakes tucked inside caves, and Tyler pointed out old settler markings scratched into the rock. I tried to imagine living out here with nothing but that sky overhead.

At the start of the Via Ferrata course, they got us all harnessed up and checked every carabiner twice—Tyler kept saying “safety first” but also told stories about his grandma climbing these cliffs as a kid. The metal rungs felt cold at first; I could hear my own breathing echoing off the canyon wall as we started up. It’s wild how quiet it gets except for your boots scraping against iron and someone below muttering encouragement (or maybe swearing under their breath). The climb is vertical enough to make you question your choices, but you’re locked in tight—still, my palms were sweaty halfway up.

I didn’t expect the view at the top to hit so hard. You can see all across East Zion and down into Kanab—red rocks everywhere, sunlight bouncing off them like fire. We sat there catching our breath while Tyler passed around cold water bottles (I swear it tasted better than any fancy drink). Someone tried to take a selfie and almost dropped their phone over the edge—cue nervous laughter. Then came the 180-foot rappel back down. My legs were jelly but once you lean back over that edge…well, you just have to trust the rope and go for it.

Back at base camp I found red dust on everything—my shoes, my hands, even inside my shirt collar somehow. We traded stories with Tyler about who slipped where or who looked most terrified (me), and he just laughed and said we’d earned our “bragging rights.” I still think about that moment right before stepping off the ledge—scared but also kind of proud? Anyway, if you’re looking for a real day trip near Zion or Bryce that’ll stick with you longer than any souvenir…this is it.
