The experience
The day starts with an hour of UTV riding from Coral Pink Sand Dune State Park through dune-like terrain called Elephant Alcove, skirting the east border of Zion National Park. You operate the vehicle yourself through the backcountry, moving at your own pace with your guide leading the way. The ride ends at the Rock Canyon trailhead, where the landscape shifts into a narrow slot canyon lined with cottonwood trees and grasses.
Once at the canyon, you drop into four rappels ranging from 15 feet to 110 feet, each one descending deeper into the alcove. Your guide handles the rope setup and safety checks. No rappelling experience is necessary, though the operator expects a moderate level of physical fitness. The 110-foot rappel into the captivating alcove is the centerpiece: the kind of moment that justifies the drive out. After the final descent, a short moderate hike brings you back up to the vehicle.
Bring a packed lunch or heavy snacks and water. The operator does not provide meals. The activity runs five and a half hours total, and being on time for pickup matters: more than 15 minutes late and the guide leaves without you. The operator runs on Mountain Time, which is an hour ahead of Las Vegas and Arizona time.
