The experience

You get picked up from your Dubai hotel and driven to Abu Dhabi in a private vehicle with your own guide. The route follows Sheikh Zayed Road, the longest highway in the UAE, built in 1980 and named after the country's founding president. Along the way the guide points out the city's layout and history, so you arrive at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque already oriented to what you're about to see.

The mosque itself holds the weight of the visit. It's one of the world's largest, with 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns, and 24-carat-gold gilded chandeliers. The hand-knotted carpet inside is the world's largest of its kind. You'll walk through it with time to photograph the courtyards and interior details. Dress code is enforced: shoulders, arms and legs covered. Women may need a headscarf, and abayas are available at the entrance if you need one. After the mosque, you stop at Heritage Village on the Breakwater, a reconstruction of a pre-oil Emirati settlement where you see how Bedouin families lived, with traditional crafts and daily life on display.

The afternoon takes you past Emirates Palace, the presidential palace complex built on 150 hectares beside it, and through the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, the largest in the Middle East. You'll have a photo stop at the dhow harbor and time to walk through Marina Mall if shopping interests you. The guide will warn you that prices are high and bargaining is expected. The tour wraps at Yas Island and Ferrari World, where you get 20 minutes to photograph the park's exterior. Entry tickets are separate. Throughout the day, the guide adjusts stops and pacing based on traffic and your interests, and you can request a meal break if you want to eat during the tour.
