The Experience

The day didn’t start quite as planned. I’d set my alarm for 6:30 but still managed to spill coffee on my shirt just before our driver arrived in Dubai—he just grinned and handed me a napkin like he’d seen it all before. That set the tone, honestly. The drive along Sheikh Zayed Road was smoother than I expected, skyscrapers giving way to desert haze, and our guide (Ahmed) kept pointing out little things I’d never have noticed—like how the road itself is named after the UAE’s founder. He had this way of making even traffic lights sound interesting.

First stop: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I’m not sure what I imagined, but stepping onto that cool marble in bare feet felt almost unreal. The silence inside was heavy but somehow comforting, broken only by whispers and camera clicks. Ahmed explained how every detail—from the floral mosaics to the chandeliers—meant something about unity or tradition. It was hot outside but under those white domes there was this gentle breeze (or maybe it was just relief). My scarf kept slipping off and an attendant smiled as she helped me fix it—I probably looked lost but nobody seemed to mind.

We swung past Emirates Palace for photos (you can’t go in unless you’re staying there, which… yeah, not on my budget) and then stopped at Qasr Al Watan’s gates—just long enough for a few snaps before heading to Heritage Village. The date market was my favorite part though; the air smelled thickly sweet and an old man insisted we try three kinds of dates before we left. I still think about those chewy ones dusted with orange peel. Somewhere between buying a tiny bag of spices and watching kids run along the Corniche, I realized how much Abu Dhabi feels both new and ancient at once.

By afternoon we were at Louvre Abu Dhabi—the light under that dome is wild, dappling everything in silver patterns—and then a quick photo stop outside Ferrari World (the red roof really does look like a spaceship). We were tired by then but happy-tired, if that makes sense. On the way back to Dubai, Ahmed played soft music and everyone dozed off except me; I kept replaying little moments from the day instead of sleeping.
