The Experience

Honestly, we almost missed our pickup in Dubai because I got distracted by the hotel’s coffee machine (rookie mistake). Our driver just grinned and waved us in — no rush, he said, “Abu Dhabi will wait for you.” The drive itself felt like a slow reveal: sand giving way to glass towers, sun catching on everything. By the time we pulled up at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, my shirt was already sticking to my back but I didn’t care. The white domes looked unreal against that blue sky. Our guide, Sameer, handed out scarves for those who needed them and told us little stories about the calligraphy inside — he even pointed out a tiny mosaic detail I’d have missed. There was this faint scent of jasmine drifting somewhere; maybe it was someone’s perfume or maybe just my imagination.

I’d seen photos of Qasr Al Watan before but standing there for a photo stop was different — it’s so big you feel small in the best way. Sameer joked that if we got lost he’d leave us to become palace ghosts (he has dad-joke energy). Lunch was at the Corniche and honestly I don’t remember what I ate because I was too busy watching families picnicking and kids running around. The sea breeze made everything taste better though. At Heritage Village, an older man showed us how they used to weave fishing nets; his hands moved so fast it made me feel clumsy just watching. The air smelled like spices and something sweet — dates maybe? We wandered through little shops where everyone smiled but didn’t push you to buy anything.

The last stop was the dates market. I tried a sample and immediately regretted not bringing more cash — they were sticky and soft and somehow tasted like caramel. On the way back to Dubai, traffic slowed us down but nobody seemed bothered; people dozed off or scrolled through photos of minarets glowing in late afternoon light. I still think about that moment walking barefoot across cool marble tiles in the mosque, feeling both tiny and lucky at once.
