The Experience

We were already halfway down Sheikh Zayed Road when our guide, Imran, pointed out the skyline — glassy towers catching the sun, a bit of morning haze still hanging over the highway. I’d barely finished my coffee (Imran handed us bottled water too), and suddenly we were pulling up to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The white marble actually made me squint — it’s that bright. I fumbled with my scarf at first (they give you abayas if you need one), but honestly, just standing there under those arches felt kind of humbling. There was this faint scent of incense in the air and a hush that made even my usually chatty sister go quiet for a minute.

After that it was straight to the Heritage Village. I didn’t expect to like it so much — clay walls, old fishing boats, Emirati women weaving baskets while kids ran around in school uniforms. Our guide told us stories about pearl diving and how his grandfather used to work these waters. I tried some dates at the market later (sticky-sweet, almost caramel-like) and bought a small box for my dad back home. At Emirates Palace, we wandered through gold-lit halls — I couldn’t help but laugh at myself for feeling out of place among all that luxury. You can grab coffee here if you want, or just people-watch; both are good options.

The afternoon blurred a little — art gallery stop (I’m not really an art person but some pieces stuck with me), then Marina Mall where we cooled off and watched families shopping for Eid gifts. We only did a photo stop at Ferrari World — no rides this time, just enough to snap a picture and joke about coming back for the roller coasters someday. The drive back was sleepy; I remember watching the sun set behind the city as Imran told us about his favorite shawarma spot in Sharjah. It’s funny what sticks with you after a day like that.
