The Experience

I didn’t expect the drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to feel so different — one minute you’re in Dubai’s glass and steel rush, then suddenly it’s desert haze and that long stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road. Our guide, Kareem, pointed out Jebel Ali Port as we passed (he joked it’s so big you could get lost for days), and I remember the windows fogging up a bit from the AC fighting the morning heat. The city just sort of appears — all white domes and sudden green palms.

Walking into Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was a quiet kind of overwhelming. You can smell clean marble and something faintly floral (maybe someone’s perfume?). Kareem explained how much gold leaf is actually inlaid here — more than I’d ever seen in one place. I tried to count the chandeliers but gave up. There was a moment when sunlight hit the tiles just right and everyone went silent for half a second. After that we wandered through Heritage Village where an old man weaving baskets showed us how he dyes palm fronds — my hands still felt gritty after trying it myself.

Lunch was at Marina Mall, which honestly felt like any mall until you look out at that blue Corniche water. We stopped for dates at the market (I bought way too many — they hand you samples until you just say yes), and then drove past Emirates Palace. Kareem told us about some Hollywood movie filmed there but I forgot which one; honestly, the lobby looked like it belonged in a dream anyway. Quick photo stops at Etihad Towers and Ferrari World — there’s something funny about standing next to a giant red car statue when you’re sweaty and sunburned. We never made it inside Louvre Abu Dhabi but seeing its dome from outside was enough for me that day.

I still think about that silence in the mosque sometimes, or how sticky my fingers were after eating dates straight from the stall. It’s not really about ticking off landmarks — though this Abu Dhabi day trip packs them in — but those odd little moments between stops that stick with you.
