The Experience

We were already halfway down the highway out of Dubai when I realized I’d left my sunglasses in the hotel room — too late. The city faded behind us, glassy towers giving way to sand and that weirdly soft morning haze. Our guide, Samir, pointed out how the desert light changes as you get closer to Abu Dhabi. He was right; it went from sharp to almost milky by the time we pulled up at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Even before stepping inside, I could smell something faintly floral on the breeze (maybe incense?) and hear a low hum of voices echoing off all that white marble.

I’d seen photos of the mosque but nothing really prepares you for standing there, looking up at those domes. There’s gold everywhere — not flashy, just quietly woven into details. Samir explained some of the patterns came from Turkish and Moroccan artists; he seemed proud in a gentle way. Walking barefoot across the cool marble felt strange at first (I kept worrying I’d trip on my abaya), but then it was just peaceful. There was this one moment where a shaft of sunlight hit the mosaic floor — I still think about that.

Afterwards, we drove over to Louvre Abu Dhabi. The building itself is kind of wild — like a spaceship made out of lace? You walk under this huge metallic dome and suddenly there’s this rain-of-light effect on your skin. It made me stop for a second just to watch dust motes floating around. Inside, you’re free to wander through galleries or just sit in front of something old and beautiful for as long as you want (I lost track of time staring at an ancient Iranian bowl). We grabbed coffee at one of the cafes before heading back; I tried to order in Arabic but probably butchered it — Samir laughed and gave me a thumbs up anyway.
