The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so quiet stepping into the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Maybe it was the way our guide paused before we went in—he just looked up at those white domes and smiled like he’d seen them a thousand times but still wasn’t bored. The marble felt cool under my feet, and there was this faint scent of incense somewhere. I tried to snap a photo but honestly, it’s one of those places where your camera can’t really do anything justice. My friend whispered something about the gold details on the columns—I think she was right, they’re almost hypnotic if you stare too long.

Driving along Sheikh Zayed Road from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is a bit of a blur—160 kilometers of desert and then suddenly the city just rises out of nowhere. Our guide (Ali) pointed out Etihad Towers and told us which one had the hotel where some movie was filmed—I forget which one now. There’s this moment when you catch the skyline reflected in all that glass, and it feels kind of futuristic but also weirdly peaceful. We stopped by Qasr Al Watan too; Ali said the limestone palace took years to build and showed us where they used real gold in the designs. I tried to imagine living somewhere like that—can’t say I managed.

The Heritage Village surprised me most. It’s not flashy, just honest—old fishing boats, date palms, people weaving baskets by hand. There was this smell of spices near the little market stalls that made me hungry even though we’d just had bottled water (which is included). Some kids were laughing by the fake hill tombs—they reminded me how much history sits underneath all these skyscrapers. We cruised along Abu Dhabi Corniche after that; sea breeze in my face, sun glinting off towers, families picnicking on patches of grass you wouldn’t expect here.

On Yas Island you see another side entirely—rollercoasters screaming somewhere in the distance at Ferrari World (nope, didn’t try), shiny malls, Formula 1 banners everywhere. It’s a lot for one day trip from Dubai but somehow doesn’t feel rushed with a local guide leading things along gently. On the drive back I caught myself replaying those first quiet moments in the mosque more than anything else—I still think about that light sometimes.
