The Experience

“You see that dome?” our guide Khalid asked as we stepped out near the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I just nodded, a bit speechless — it was early, but the white marble shimmered like it had its own light. The place smelled faintly of incense and new stone. Inside, my feet padded across the world’s biggest carpet (I swear I could feel the patterns under my socks), and there was this hush — even with a crowd, everyone moved slow, almost whispering. Khalid explained how 50,000 people can pray here at once. I tried to imagine that sound filling the domes.

The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi took about 90 minutes along Sheikh Zayed Road — windows full of sand and sky that kept changing color. We passed Etihad Towers (they looked like glass sails) before pulling up to Emirates Palace. I’m not usually into fancy hotels but sitting in a velvet chair sipping “gold coffee” (yes, real gold flakes on top — kind of nutty flavor?), I felt weirdly at ease. The staff were so relaxed about it all, like serving gold was just Tuesday for them. There’s something about the way sunlight hits all those domes and fountains — hard to describe without sounding dramatic.

Lunch was at Marina Mall — nothing too fussy but good for people-watching (lots of families out shopping). Afterward we wandered through Heritage Village where a woman showed me how to spin wool by hand. My hands fumbled; she laughed softly and just showed me again. There were palm leaf huts and old pottery everywhere, plus a breeze carrying sea salt from the Corniche nearby. I still remember standing under those palm trees looking back at Abu Dhabi’s skyline — felt both ancient and brand new at once.

We made quick stops for photos at Ferrari World (red everywhere), then ended with fresh dates from a market stall before heading back to Dubai in air-conditioned comfort. It wasn’t all perfect timing or smooth transitions — sometimes we lingered too long or rushed past something cool — but honestly, that made it feel more real.
