The Experience

We were already craning our necks before we even got out of the car—white domes everywhere, sunlight bouncing off marble so bright I had to squint. Our guide, Imran, handed us bottled water (felt like a small rescue in that dry morning air) and led us up to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. He started telling stories about the artisans who made the mosaics—his voice echoing a little under those huge arches. I remember the faint smell of jasmine from someone’s perfume as we shuffled past. It’s hard to describe how quiet it felt inside, even with other visitors around. I caught myself whispering for no reason.

After that, we zipped over to Heritage Village—Imran joked that if we got lost in the old souk he’d just trade us for dates. The market was full of voices and hands moving quickly over fabrics. Someone offered me cardamom coffee (I spilled some on my sleeve; still smelled it hours later). At Emirates Palace, everything felt impossibly gold. We wandered through halls where staff nodded politely but barely made a sound—except for one guy who laughed when I tried to say “shukran” properly. The whole place almost didn’t feel real.

I wasn’t expecting to like Marina Mall but ended up buying sweets I’d never heard of (the pistachio one was too sweet but I ate it anyway). The Corniche was breezy and full of families cycling or just sitting by the sea. At some point Imran pointed out Etihad Towers in the distance; they looked like something from a sci-fi movie against that pale blue sky. We finished at Qasr Al Watan—so much carved stone and light everywhere you look. By then my feet hurt but honestly, I didn’t want it to end yet.
