The Experience

I was already half-awake when our driver pulled up outside my hotel in Dubai—still dark out, but you could feel that dry Gulf air promising heat later. We’d barely left the city before our guide, Tariq, started pointing out little things along the road—how the sand changes color as you get closer to Abu Dhabi. There’s something about long drives in the UAE: you watch towers fade behind you and suddenly it’s just desert and low sun. I didn’t expect to feel so calm about it.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is… well, I’m not sure I have words for it. You step inside and everything goes quiet—marble underfoot, that faint perfume of oud drifting somewhere. Tariq explained how each dome had its own design story (I lost count at 20 domes, honestly). The gold details almost glowed in the morning light. At one point a little girl giggled as she tried to walk across the carpet barefoot—it’s the softest thing I’ve ever felt under my toes. We had plenty of time to wander; no rush at all.

After that, we did quick stops at places like Emirates Palace (just for photos—the doormen there look like they’ve seen everything), Etihad Towers glinting in the haze, and then along the Corniche where families were already out walking. Lunch was at Marina Mall—nothing fancy for us but good shawarma hits different after mosque silence. Tariq insisted we try dates from a stall near Heritage Village (“over a hundred kinds,” he said—I believed him). I still think about that sticky-sweet taste mixed with strong coffee.

Yas Island was our last big stop—Ferrari World looks wild even from outside, all red curves and noise. We didn’t go on rides (not enough time), but just standing there watching people come off the world’s fastest rollercoaster with their hair everywhere made me laugh. It was a lot for one day but somehow didn’t feel rushed; maybe because every spot had its own rhythm or maybe because Tariq kept telling stories about growing up here. Anyway, driving back into Dubai at sunset felt different than leaving it.
