The Experience

The first thing I noticed when we pulled into Abu Dhabi was the light — kind of hazy but golden, bouncing off the white domes of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Our guide, Ahmed, handed me a scarf at the entrance (I’d forgotten mine), and I remember feeling oddly nervous stepping barefoot onto that cool marble. The silence inside was almost heavy, except for the soft shuffle of other visitors. Ahmed pointed out the floral mosaics under our feet and shared a story about how artisans came from all over to build this place. I tried to picture it — all those hands working together — but honestly, I just kept staring up at the chandeliers.

Afterwards, we drove past Qasr Al Watan — you can’t go in without a ticket, but even from the road it looked like something out of a storybook. The Emirates Palace stop was quick (security’s tight), but I did manage to get a photo with my friend grinning in front of those gold-topped domes. Ahmed joked that if we found any gold bars lying around, he’d take half. We both laughed — I think he tells that one a lot.

The Heritage Village surprised me; it smelled faintly of spices and old wood, which reminded me of my grandmother’s kitchen somehow. There were people weaving baskets by hand and an old man who smiled but didn’t say much as he hammered copper. The Corniche was next — just this long stretch of blue water and city skyline. We stopped for photos again (I’m not usually big on selfies but couldn’t resist). By then it was getting hot and my shirt stuck to my back, so lunch at Marina Mall felt like heaven. There’s plenty to eat there — I went for shawarma because why not?

We finished with a quick photo stop at Ferrari World (the red roof is wild in person) before heading back to Dubai. On the drive home, I kept replaying that moment in the mosque when everything felt still — not sure why it stuck with me so much. Maybe because it was so different from everywhere else we’d been that day.
