The Experience

The first thing I noticed on this Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip was how the city just sort of faded behind us—one minute we were in that glassy Dubai rush, and then suddenly it was desert, flat and kind of endless. Our guide, Samir, had this way of telling stories that made even the drive feel alive. He pointed out little things along the Gulf coast—a fisherman’s boat bobbing near the shore, someone selling dates from a pickup truck. I didn’t expect to care about the road itself, but there was something calming about it.

Walking up to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque felt surreal. The white marble almost glowed under the sun (I probably squinted half the time), and there was this faint smell of incense drifting from somewhere. Samir reminded us gently about covering up—he handed me an abaya with a smile when my scarf slipped off my hair for the third time. Inside, it was quiet except for soft footsteps and whispers bouncing off all that stone. The carpet underfoot was so thick you almost wanted to take your shoes off for real.

After a quick photo stop at the Louvre Abu Dhabi (the dome really does look like it’s floating), we cruised along the Corniche. I think Qasr Al Watan surprised me most—so much gold and light everywhere, but what stuck with me was how our guide talked about Emirati culture before we went in since guides aren’t allowed inside. He explained how every detail meant something (I forgot half of it but remember feeling small in a good way). We ended at Etihad Towers’ observation deck; honestly, I’m not great with heights but standing there looking over Abu Dhabi as dusk crept in... I still think about that view sometimes.
