The Experience

The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is longer than I expected—almost two hours—but honestly, it felt like less. Our guide, Khaled, kept pointing out things I’d never notice on my own (the port at Jebel Ali is massive; I thought he was joking about how big). The road felt endless in that desert way—just sand and sky—until suddenly the city appeared, glassy and white. First stop: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. I’ve seen pictures but standing there in socks on the cool marble, it’s something else. The air smelled faintly of incense and dust. The guy selling them handed me one to try; his hands were sticky with syrup. Then we drove along the Corniche for photos—the sea looked impossibly blue against all those white buildings. Qasr Al Watan felt almost too grand to be real; chandeliers everywhere, ceilings so high your voice echoes weirdly when you talk. Last bit was Saadiyat Island (still mostly under construction) and a quick photo stop at Ferrari World—I’m not really a car person but that red roof is hard to forget.

On the way back to Dubai I dozed off for a bit, still thinking about that first moment stepping into the mosque—all quiet except for shoes shuffling on marble.
