The Experience

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to feel so small standing under the domes of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. We’d just rolled in from Dubai, still half awake, and then there it was — all that white marble glowing in the morning sun. Our guide Khalid handed me a scarf (I’d forgotten about mosque dress codes), and he explained the calligraphy circling above us. The air smelled faintly of rose water and new stone. I tried to pronounce “An-Naskh” — Li laughed when I tried to say it in Arabic. Probably butchered it.

Driving along the Corniche felt like flipping through postcards: turquoise water on one side, glass towers on the other, joggers weaving between palm trees. At Heritage Village, an old man showed us how to weave palm fronds — his hands moved so fast I couldn’t keep up. There were camels lounging in the shade, and kids running around with sticky date sweets. The market stalls had this mix of incense and cardamom drifting everywhere. I picked up some silver bangles for my niece; still not sure if they’re real silver but she won’t care.

We stopped for lunch at a mall (not included, but honestly I was craving something cold). Then came Emirates Palace — gold everywhere, even in the cappuccino foam if you wanted it. Khalid told us stories about royal weddings here; meanwhile I was busy counting chandeliers (lost track after twenty). Ferrari World was just a photo stop — we didn’t go inside but took silly pictures pretending to drive invisible cars outside the red roof. By late afternoon, I was tired but kind of wired from all the color and noise. That first glimpse of the mosque kept replaying in my head on the way back to Dubai.
